resident Joko “Jokowi” Widodo called on people to strengthen unity despite political and religious differences during a ceremony to launch the new Indonesian Islamic Museum in Jombang, East Java, on Tuesday.
“This museum serves as the new learning platform for the newest generation to learn more about Islamic teachings, as well as to maintain the harmony between people from different cultural backgrounds,” Jokowi said in his speech at the Tebuireng Islamic boarding school.
Tebuireng’s caretaker, Salahuddin “Gus Sholah” Wahid, said the community had been waiting for the museum to be officially launched since the construction project was completed in 2011.
“In this museum, people can find out more about the history of Islam in Indonesia, that’s why people have been waiting for it to be opened,” Salahuddin told The Jakarta Post.
The museum was built to pay respect to clerics who fought for Indonesia’s independence. The museum’s construction cost Rp 30 billion (US$2 million).
