he development of a 3.6-hectare town square in Depok, West Java, has been hampered by bad weather and lightning that have been occurring since early this month, a developer executive has said.
Adi Patek, a project supervisor for contractor PT Merdeka Inti Persada, said his side was concerned about the safety of their workers, “as we work outdoors,” he said as quoted by tempo.co.
Despite the bad weather, Adi said the firm would keep trying to complete the construction by the end of this month, as planned.
“By adding more workers and working hours,” he said. “It has now reached 70 to 80 percent completion.”
Depok city administration has allocated around Rp 122.6 billion (US$8.25 billion) for the development of the square, located in Grand Depok City complex in Cilodong subdistrict, which will include sport facilities.
The Climate, Meteorology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has reported that Depok and Bogor in West Java are among the areas with the highest lightning frequency, with up to 700,000 lighting strikes occurring in those places each year.
Depok Mayor M. Idris previously said the first development phase of the square, which required Rp 32.6 billion, would be completed within this month. Meanwhile, the second development phase would commence in 2019.
However, Idris acknowledged that heavy rain and lightning could potentially endanger the workers.
Therefore, Idris said his side was discussing the solution of the development, as stipulated in Presidential Regulation No. 16/2018, deeming that the contract with the developer should not be terminated if the project runs late. (sau)
