he Bekasi municipal administration will open three new regional hospitals next year amid the administration’s reported outstanding debts for its public health care scheme.
The hospitals are located in three subdistricts in Bekasi city, West Java, namely Pondok Gede, Jatisampurna and Bantar Gebang.
The hospitals are expected to improve the Health Card service, Bekasi Mayor Rahmat Effendi said. With the presence of regional hospitals, the administration also expects residents to reduce their dependence on private hospitals.
All new hospitals are type D, which provides general medicine and dentistry services, which is one level above community health centers.
“[God willing] in 2019 we will open three type D public hospitals,” he said on Thursday as quoted by kompas.com, adding that the constructions had been completed.
With the additional three hospitals, the city will have four regional public hospitals, including the main Dr. Chasbullah Abdulmadjid Hospital.
The administration was recently hit by claims made by the Association of Private Hospitals in Bekasi that said the administration owed about Rp 200 billion (US$13.5 million) to private hospitals through its flagship Health Card program for the period June to September this year.
However, Rahmat brushed off the claims, saying that it owed around Rp 129 billion.
He said an independent team hired by the administration was verifying the amount owed before the administration proceeded with the payment. (sau)
