Indonesian paracyclist Sri Sugiyanti had to be satisfied with silver as a result of what she claimed was a lack of training prior to the Asian Track Championships being held at the Jakarta International Velodrome on Friday.

Competing in the women’s individual pursuit paracyling B (visual impairment), Sri, accompanied by her pilot Ni’mal Magfiroh, finished in second place in the final duel against Malaysian Nur Azlia Syafinaz Mohd Zais, who was piloted by Nurul Suhada Zainal.

Sri and Ni’mal, who have been paired together for about a year, clocked a time of four minutes and 7.889 seconds, five seconds slower than their Malaysian counterparts who finished the 3,000-meter race in four minutes and 2.918 seconds. Despite the defeat, Sri was able to repeat her achievement in the 2018 Asian Para Games in Jakarta when she also won silver in the same category.

After the race, Sri, who hails from Grobogan regency in Central Java, said she could not perform her best due to the limited preparation ahead of the competition. After winning three silvers and one bronze medal at the Asian Para Games, Sri took a rest for about two months after the Games.

“I only practiced for three weeks ahead of the [Championships]. So, it was hard to find the rhythm again. Also I did a mistake at the start,” she told journalists.

Sri’s time during Friday’s final was slower than her record in the qualifying round earlier in the day. In the qualifying round, she managed to clock a time of four minutes and 6.818 seconds.

“This [result] is far from what I expected. I need to continue practicing and also learning more about all the technical stuff like the standing position,” she added.

Fadilah Umar, the country’s paracyling team coordinator, said Sri’s achievement was still good given the limited preparation she had. He added that the paracyling team would try its best to send athletes to the Tokyo Paralympics in 2020, with mainstay racer Muhammad Fadli as the primary athlete expected to pass the qualification.

In another race, the journey of hopeful Chrismonita Dwi Putri in the women’s elite 200-m sprint ended at the quarterfinal after losing to China’s Zhong Tianshi.

Meanwhile, Nandra Eko Wahyudi, who competed in the men’s elite omnium, could not continue the point race event after he crashed with several other cyclist during the 28th lap.

Nandra was feared to have dislocated his left wrist and was immediately rushed to the hospital after the crash.

In the final classification of the category, Nandra stood in 12th place with a negative 18 points. Eiya Hashimoto of Japan bagged the gold medal, while Yousif Mirza Al-Hammadi of the United Arab Emirates and Dongin Shin of South Korea trailed in second and third place.

Terry Kusuma became the last hope for the country to win a medal in Friday’s competition. Competing in the men’s elite 1,000-m time trial, Terry qualified for the final spot with a convincing performance in the qualification round after clocking a time of one minute and 3.031 seconds, trailing Kazakhstan’s Sergey Ponomaryov closely who led with qualification with one minute and 2.402 seconds.
