Greater Jakarta: City Hall staff lose parking spot

ity Hall civil servants were spotted parking their vehicles in several neighboring office complexes on Tuesday after Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan put an end to a parking subsidy for city officials at the National Monument (Monas).

As a result, those who drive their cars to work must pay Rp 550,000 (US$39) per month in parking fees at the IRTI parking lot, an eight-fold increase from Rp 66,000 a month.

Many have chosen instead to park their vehicles at the Telkom building, the Press Council headquarters, the National Resilience Institute and the National Library.

For motorcycles, the parking fee increased to Rp 352,000 a month from the previously subsidized Rp 22,000.

City Hall employees are also no longer allowed to park at the City Council complex.

On Tuesday, several security guards were seen standing in front of the complex’s gates.

“[Civil servants] are no longer allowed to park here; it’s only for councillors,” security guard Achida Dewanto said as quoted by wartakota.tribunnews.com.

Some civil servants used parking spaces on Jl. Jaksa, Gondangdia, Kebon Sirih and even nearby school buildings.

“Yesterday I parked my vehicle at the Press Council. Today, I parked at an elementary school. It’s quite a long walk from the area to my office,” said city official Danu.
