he police have arrested a third man, identified as AM, in connection with a clash between street vendors and Public Order Agency (Satpol PP) officers in Tanah Abang, Central Jakarta, last Thursday.
“We arrested an additional suspect on Sunday night. He works as a scavenger,” said Tanah Abang Police chief Sr. Adj. Comr. Lukman Cahyono, as reported by kompas.com on Wednesday.
Lukman said the police found out about the suspect by questioning eyewitnesses, who included Satpol PP officers and vendors on Jl. Jatibaru Raya, and by viewing video footage of the clash.
“According to our investigation, [AM] threw a paving block at a Satpol PP car,” Lukman said.
Lukman said police were still looking for three other people who may have helped provoke the clash in Tanah Abang. “Three suspects are still on the run and we are looking for them,” he said.
The clash between Tanah Abang street vendors and Satpol PP officers started at 10 a.m. on Jan. 17 when the latter attempted to close down the sidewalk vendors. The vendors reportedly threw rocks at the officers. The police previously arrested two other people in the case, identified only as EW, 28, and SE, 54, for allegedly urging street vendors to resist the raid and for throwing rocks and steel handlebars at the officers.
