Two Indonesian design students from Jakarta — Daniel from Petra Christian University’s school of architecture and Silvia Ervina from Pelita Harapan University — are going to represent Indonesia in a competition with students from 14 other Asian countries for a summer school program scholarship at the prestigious Harvard University in the United States.
In addition to competing for the highly coveted scholarship, the two students will also participate in the Asia Young Designer of the Year, an Asian-level competition to identify new talents in the architecture and interior design world. The scholarship recipient and the title’s winner will be announced at the upcoming 2018/2019 Asia Young Designer of the Year, with the date and place to be revealed later.
The two young talents were screened through the Indonesian selection phase of the Asia-level competition, called the Asia Young Designer Award — Indonesia, organized by paint manufacturer Nippon Paint Indonesia, which has its headquarters in Japan. The multinational company launched the competition in 2008 in Malaysia with the name Nippon Paint Young Designer Award but starting in 2011 it has expanded into a regional-level competition.
According to the award’s panel of judges, the Indonesian level of the competition assessed participants’ innovative capacity through design to set contemporary trends and impact the environment and society positively.
Nippon Paint Indonesia decorative paints chief executive officer Jon Tan, meanwhile, said that by collaborating with university students, the company demonstrated its commitment to support the progress of the architecture and interior design fields in Indonesia, especially by nurturing students who will determine the two fields’ future.
“The awards this year represented a more solid synergy between our company and university students, by forming partnerships with the best Indonesian universities, which integrated the theme of the competition into their students’ assignments,” he explained.
More than just a competition platform, the annual awards event also sought to help students up the ante of their professional skills through mentoring programs with professionals, who guided the students to refine their projects through coaching sessions, while also introducing them to prominent figures in the industry through networking activities.
