LIPI crisis hits new low with research docs removal

Calls for Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) chairman Laksmana Tri Handoko to quit his position have grown stronger as his researchers fumed over the institute’s decision to remove old research papers from its library. A Facebook post made by a researcher at LIPI’s Cultural and Society Study Center, Wahyudi Akmaliah, stated that approximately 32,000 thesis and dissertation papers had been removed from LIPI’s Scientific Documentation Center (PDDI-LIPI).“Removing the dissertation and thesis collections potentially erases the function of the scientific documentation center,” Wahyudi said. He believes what the PDDI has done is attempted “bibliocide”, a term that he used to describe the elimination of literature.“How can we help the public to develop their collective memories regarding our nation’s history if the references are being removed?” he added.
