T

he Indonesian Consumers Foundation (YLKI) reminded the authorities to equip the Jakarta MRT with signs for the safety of customers and the facility’s sustainability.

YLKI chairman Tulus Abadi commended the MRT station infrastructure, cars, noiseless and stable trips, 30 seconds boarding time and five minutes headway.

He said the waiting rooms at MRT stations had been equipped with automatic doors, which was important for the safety of commuters to prevent them from being hit by the trains.

“However, there are some notes for Jakarta MRT, such as there are not enough signs informing and educating commuters, in stations or cabins,” Tulus said in a written statement on Tuesday.

He said there were no signs to remind passengers not to lean on the train doors or to prevent commuters from eating and drinking inside MRT cars or waiting rooms, while this was standard practice in MRT services around the world.

“There are also no public announcements, whether spoken or written, about the opening and closing of train doors. This is important especially if the train cars are full,” Tulus said.

He said the MRT also did not have any overhead luggage storage.

“When I confirmed this with the MRT’s spokesperson, he said the space for overhead luggage would be used for advertising. The YLKI advises that there should be luggage spots, even if not fully installed,” he said.

He said there were also no maps of the routes, transportation network or feeder services in stations or inside MRT cars.

He said that Jakarta MRT should complete the informative signs soon, as it was important to encourage people to use public transportation.
