ootage showing what appears to be a quarrel involving a European tourist and a ranger at Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park in East Java made the rounds on social media over the weekend, with the tourist allegedly opposed to rangers’ warnings about not entering a prohibited zone.

The dispute occurred on Friday when one of the rangers attempted to stop the male tourist from entering a prohibited area within a radius of 1 kilometer from the crater of an active volcano. The dispute led to a physical altercation when the ranger eventually denied the tourist entry.

The male tourist was reportedly traveling with a female tourist who was not recorded in the video.

National park spokesman Syarif Hidayat said the rangers had warned them by blasting a loud siren and made an announcement using a megaphone. Nevertheless, both tourists allegedly refused to heed the warning and kept going forward until one of the rangers had to confront them on the ground.

“They rented an Enduro motorcycle to visit the park and hid it behind a public toilet area. Then they continued their trip by walking to the crater area before they got caught by the rangers,” Syarif told The Jakarta Post on Saturday.

According to Syarif, footage confirmed that one of the tourists pushed a ranger to the ground.

“However, after they found out that they had been arguing with staff members of the national park, they apologized and climbed down from the prohibited zone,” Syarif added.

A recent update from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation (PVMBG) stated that the mountain’s status was maintained at Level 2 in the four-tiered alert system. Both domestic and international tourists are prohibited from entering the area within a radius of 1 km from the crater. (dpk/swd)
