P

olice are trying to trace the identity of a pregnant woman found dead near an entrance to the Jagorawi toll road in the Makasar subdistrict of East Jakarta on Sunday morning.

The body was found by a man, Irfan Jaya, who smelled a pungent odor coming from a spot about 10 meters from the road and about 100 m from the nearest residences. The woman was buried 30 centimeters deep and was covered with banana leaves. She had apparently been there for two days.

Irfan immediately sought help from locals and police who were on duty nearby.

Makasar Police chief Comr. Lindang Lumban Toruan said the woman, estimated to be about 25 years old, was not registered as an ID card holder as the police failed to find anything about her when they tried to match her fingerprints with those in their database.

“We couldn’t find any information in our database,” he said on Tuesday, as quoted by wartakota.com, adding that they found no identification whatsoever on the body.

Lindang said the police were still conducting a forensic examination on the woman who was eight or nine months pregnant. The results of a preliminary examination indicated that the woman had been physically abused.

“[The woman] apparently died after being hit in the forehead and in the back,” he said, adding that they also found no CCTV footage of the incident as the area was in a blank spot.

The police have distributed notices describing the physical characteristics of the woman, whose body is being kept at the Kramat Jati Police Hospital in East Jakarta. She was approximately 150 centimeters tall and had shoulder-length hair.

The woman had been wearing a green shirt bearing the picture of a balloon and black-and-red-striped leggings. She had a mole under her right ear.

“Hopefully, her family, relatives and friends would notice as soon as possible,” Lindang said. (das)
