The sentence was heavier that the 20 years' imprisonment and Rp 10 billion (US$691,250) fine sought by the prosecutors.
rench national Felix Dorfin, 35, was handed the death sentence on Monday for smuggling various drugs totaling 2.77 kilograms to Lombok island last year.
The judges, Isnurul Syamsul Arif, Ranto Indra Karta and Didiek Jatmiko, read their sentence in the Mataram District Court in Mataram, West Nusa Tenggara.
“Considering all the facts presented during the hearings, the panel of judges has decided to hand down the death sentence to the defendant,” the presiding judge, Isnurul, said.
The judges found Dorfin guilty of violating Article 113 on drug smuggling in the 2009 law on drugs
Dorfin was arrested by customs officers on Sept. 21 last year at Lombok International Airport in Mataram, where he had just landed from Changi Airport in Singapore.
The officers found drugs in two suitcases he was carrying. The suitcases were modified to hide the drugs.
Among the evidence were nine packages of MDMA, used to make ecstacy pills, weighing 2.47 kilograms, one packet of crystal methamphetamine weighing 256.69 grams, one packet of ketamine weighing 206.83 grams, 828 blue ecstasy pills and 22 brown ecstasy pills.
