Hundreds of police offices armed with riot control devices have been deployed to secure the KPU office in Central Jakarta.

he police have increased security measures after the General Elections Commission (KPU) officially declared President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo the winner of last month’s presidential election in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

National Police spokesman Brig. Gen. Dedi Prasetyo confirmed that security had been tightened following the KPU’s official vote tally announcement, which was made before the May 22 deadline. 

“We can confirm the top alert status today," Dedi was quoted by Antara news agency as saying.

According to an official police telegram dated May 20, the police would raise the alert level for public order and safety from May 21 to May 25.  The letter, signed by Insp. Gen. Martuani Sormin on behalf of National Police chief Gen. Tito Karnavian, also calls on regional police forces to anticipate possible disturbances in their respective regions.

The police have deployed hundreds of personnel to ensure security around the General Elections Commission (KPU) office on Jl. Imam Bonjol, Central Jakarta. They are equipped with riot control devices, including long-range firearms and sniffer dogs. 

Two water cannons and one Barracuda APC Mobile Brigade armored vehicle were stationed near the building.
