span>Leaders from around the world have begun to congratulate President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo after the General Elections Commission (KPU) concluded the official tally of votes in the early hours of Tuesday to confirm the incumbent as winner of last month’s elections.

Jokowi and running mate Ma’ruf Amin secured 85 million votes (55.5 percent), around 17 million votes more than the Prabowo Subianto-Sandiaga Uno ticket, according to the KPU’s final tally.

Leaders from Indonesia’s closest neighbors, including Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, were among the first to call or send their congratulations.

“I congratulate Mr. @jokowi for his official victory as President of the Republic of Indonesia. I hope cooperation between the two countries will become more closer after this,” Mahathir said on his official Twitter account.

Meanwhile, Lee sent a letter to Jokowi praising his reelection as a reflection of the trust the Indonesian people have in his leadership.

“I look forward to working closely with you to build on what we achieved and to explore new opportunities for cooperation,” he said, adding that he looked forward to meeting Jokowi at the ASEAN Summit in Bangkok next month.

Australia’s Morrison, who himself had just come off of a surprise election win over the weekend, also congratulated Jokowi for his win.

“Indonesia is one of Australia’s most important strategic relationships. We look forward to further deepening ties between Australia and Indonesia across all of our shared interests,” he said on Twitter.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also posted congratulatory remarks on the popular social media platform.

“As two large democracies, we take collective pride in successful celebration of democracy. We wish you and people of Indonesia all success under your dynamic leadership. As our nations mark seven decades of our diplomatic relationship, I look forward to working closely with you to further deepen our bilateral Comprehensive Strategic Partnership,” he tweeted both in English and in Indonesian.

In the past month, Jokowi, Morrison and Modi have all contested elections in their respective countries. On Sunday, Morrison celebrated a “miracle” election victory that defied unfavorable opinion polls and landed him with a parliamentary majority.

Modi’s National Democratic Alliance is projected to win between 339 and 365 seats in the 545-member lower house of parliament, according to an exit poll from India Today Axis from Sunday. The seven-phase general elections, billed as the world’s biggest exercise in democracy, began on April 11 and ended on Sunday.

Messages from other leaders continued to trickle in on Tuesday, with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe saying he looked forward to strengthening relations between the two nations, according to a statement from the Japanese Embassy.
