Woman grandmaster Medina Warda Aulia put on a stunning performance in the second round of the 2019 JAPFA Grandmaster and Women Grandmaster Chess Tournament, defeating grandmaster Ivan Sokolov of the Netherlands in a match on Friday. The two battled it out for 3.5 hours before the host player, who has an Elo rating of 2375, dominated Sokolov (Elo 2595). “I started the match a little slow but I managed to improve the pace before finally defeating [Sokolov],” Medina told the press after the match in Yogyakarta. Medina forced Sokolov to end his run on the 38th move. The Indonesian played the white confidently, deploying the king to push back her opponent’s defense.
