preliminary investigation into an accident that killed 12 on a toll road has revealed that before the accident occurred, a passenger had tried to snatch a cell phone from a bus driver before the bus went over the road separator and hit three vehicles.

The accident at the 150 kilometer point on the Cikopo-Palimanan (Cipali) toll road in West Java also severely injured 11 people, while 32 others sustained minor injuries, the police reported on Monday.

The accident involved four vehicles: A Safari bus with Semarang registration, a Mitsubishi Xpander and an Innova registered in Greater Jakarta as well as a truck registered in Banyumas, the police report said. The accident happened in the lane heading to Jakarta from the east, near the 150 km point of the toll road. The driver was in the lane heading from Jakarta and went over the road separator, going into the opposite lane. There is no concrete barrier in that section of the road, only a narrow green strip.

At least three witnesses told the police that before the accident occurred, a male passenger from Cirebon, identified as A, 29, had gotten into a physical altercation with the driver. The driver was among the fatalities.

At least one witness said that A, a security guard at a building in Jakarta who reportedly survived the accident, tried to snatch a cell phone from the driver, Majalengka Police traffic unit head, Adj. Comr. Atik Suswanti, said on Monday.

Other passengers said A tried to take control of the wheel before the accident occurred at 1 a.m. on Monday.

“We haven’t reached a conclusion about what caused the accident. Some witnesses are still being treated in the hospital,” said West Java Police spokesperson Sr. Comr. Trunoyudho Wisnu Andikoadi.
