T

he administration of Karanganyar, Central Java, is to close down all eateries in the regency selling dishes containing dog meat, Regent Juliyatmono told the Dog Meat Free Indonesia (DMFI) coalition and the Animal Friends Jogja community.

Speaking at the regency administration secretariat on Monday, the regent said the measure was to be taken in a bid to prevent the spread of dog meat borne diseases in the region.

“We are begging for support so that there will be no dog meat borne diseases in Karanganyar regency,” Juliyatmono said.

The closure, he added, aimed to protect people and promote harmony between God and other living creatures, he added.

Karanganyar is home to some 21 eateries offering dishes containing dog meat. They are spread in a number of regions such as Colomadu, Jaten, Kebakkramat, Matesih, Gondangrejo and Karanganyar districts.

According to DMFI coalition representative Angelina Pane, some 13,000 dogs had been brought in from East Java and West Java weekly to meet the demand for dog meat in Greater Surakarta, including Karanganyar regency.

She, therefore, urged all the administrations in Greater Surakarta to close all culinary businesses offering dishes containing dog meat on their menus.
