The Soccer Association of Indonesia is bidding to host the 2034 World Cup hand in hand with Australia.
“Yes, we are [in talks with Australia to host the World Cup],” PSSI media relations director Gatot Widakdo told The Jakarta Post by phone on Friday.
As reported by Reuters, Football Federation Australia also has confirmed the plan for a joint bid.
“Football Federation Australia confirms it has held discussions with [the PSSI] about the possibility to jointly bid for the 2034 FIFA World Cup,” the FFA said as quoted by Reuters.
According to Gatot, the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) had chosen Indonesia and Thailand to bid for the 2034 World Cup in 2017.
“However, it turned out that the Football Association of Thailand failed to get the guarantee letter from their government, and thus they backed off. Indonesia then decides to keep going, but in cooperation with Australia,” Gatot said.
