he Cisoka Police have charged Sarjaya, 63, with manslaughter after he stabbed his brother-in-law who was an Islamic teacher in Nanggung village in Tangerang, Banten.
“The sentence carries a maximum punishment of 15 years in prison,” Cisoka Police chief Adj. Comr. Uka Subakti said on Wednesday as quoted by tempo.co.
He said Sarjaya did not commit the crime against Yahya intentionally.
“He did it spontaneously,” Uka said.
Sarjaya was arrested for allegedly stabbing Yahya, 56, for stopping him from taking his wife home.
He claimed that had he tried to visit Yahya 15 times to meet his wife, who had fled to her brother’s home after a domestic conflict six months ago. Previously, the police stated that Sarjaya had tried to meet his wife six times.
Yahya died on the spot after being stabbed in the neck with the machete he was going to use to cut mango trees.
Sarjaya has admitted that he was irritated by Yahya’s attitude. (das)
