S

tate-owned port operator Pelindo III has confirmed that a container ship, MV Soul of Luck, crashed into a container crane at the Semarang Container Terminal (TPKS) in Central Java.

The incident occurred at around 5 p.m. on Sunday as the ship was approaching its berth.

As a result, the crane that was hit, crane number 3, is now broken, the port operator said in a written statement.

“There were no casualties in the incident. Soon after the ship crashed into the crane, we evacuated those within a radius of several meters,” Pelindo III spokesperson Wilis Aji Wiranata said at the company’s central office in Surabaya, East Java.

He said he hoped the loading and unloading process at the dock could return to normal soon as the TPKS was important to Central Java and its surrounding areas.

The Semarang terminal is the main export-import gate in the region. Pelindo III, therefore, is expected to work quickly toward mitigating any financial risk that could emerge following the crash.
