Hanan Khalid’s superb unbeaten ton gives Jaguar CC easy win

The GMIS JCA league games on Sunday followed a very different track to the nail-biting excitement that followed later in the day at the World Cup as Jaguar CC, Menara CC and Jakarta Barbarians recorded comfortable wins. This week’s action clearly favored the batsmen with three scores of 80 plus and an unbeaten ton.

Jaguar CC took on WPP India XI in a crucial 35 overs game that would impact its chances of avoiding relegation to Division 2. Dhiraj Nagpal struck early with two back-to-back wickets, but Hanan Khalid was holding firm at the other end. He got good support from Karanjit Singh and Harry Sidhu as Jaguar CC put up a huge score of 226 with Hanan carrying his bat and hitting an unbeaten ton in the process.

The WPP India XI batting did not click once again and Waqar Ali and Jagdeep Singh had WPP reeling at 58 for 6. Just when all looked lost for them, Farid Ahmad and Harshit Gupta fought back with a superb 87 run stand and brought WPP right back into contention with 82 needed in the last 11 overs. Waqar Ali returned to break the partnership and with it any hopes of WPP India XI registering its first win of the season.

Menara CC played superbly to beat Challengers CC in a game that was crucial in determining the winner of Division 2. The Menara top order batted with a lot of intent and were off to a speedy start. Sunil Samtani and Manickavasagan pulled things back with a few quick blows and were hopeful of stemming the run-rate. But, Usman Muhammad was in the mood and he in the company of Deepak Khullar, playing with a lot of freedom, added 100 runs in the last 10 overs to set up a huge target of 190 for Challengers CC.

Raja Zahid Hameed got rid of the Challengers openers and Iruthayaraj and Faheem Butt bowled tight spells to restrict Challengers to just 48 for 3 in their first 10 overs. Acceleration was needed and Santosh Kumar and Srinivasan Govindraj tried hard to do that with a good partnership but they ended up falling short by 39 runs. This win means that Menara CC still has a chance to win Division 2 if it wins its last game.

While Yadavas Chairos Tigers have an unassailable lead atop Division 1, the battle for runner-up position is still on and very intense with 3 teams in contention. Two of these contenders, WISCI Wanderers and Jakarta Barbarians faced off in a crucial T20 clash on Sunday.

Naresh Gupta started the innings off for WISCI in a hurry and was particularly severe on Vivek Nair, who however had the last laugh when he trapped Naresh in front for 26. Vivek Nair then combined with his namesake Vivek Singh to have WISCI struggling at 77 for 6. An excellent rearguard knock by Suhail Modak ensured that WISCI reached 141 in its 20 overs.

Ben Burgess owned the Barbarians reply with a superb unbeaten knock of 88 off just 56 balls to take his side home with plenty of overs and wickets to spare.
