s many as 1,600 student athletes from 10 countries all over Southeast Asia are expected to swarm into Semarang, Central Java to show their best sporting skills in the 11th ASEAN Schools Games (ASG).
The annual multisport event, which runs from Thursday until July 25, features athletics, badminton, basketball, pencak silat, sepak takraw, swimming, tennis and volleyball.
The Games are for secondary schools student athletes in ASEAN and are organized under the authority of the ASEAN Schools Sports Council (ASSC).
A torch relay was run on Wednesday on the way to the opening ceremony, which was to be held at the Holy Terang Bangsa School on Thursday afternoon.
Semarang Mayor Hendrar Prihadi said the Youth and Sports Ministry appointed his city to host the week-long event nine months ago.
“We have prepared a list of competition venues. We will have [students] from 10 countries of ASEAN participating in the event and [representatives] from Mongolia who will act as observers,” he said during the torch relay.
“We’ve also asked the [Semarang] education agency to bring schoolchildren to the venues to watch the competitions,” he added.
