Transjakarta-ASEAN MRT station integration project begins

span>The groundbreaking ceremony for the integration between the Transjakarta bus stop and the ASEAN MRT station on the old Centrale Stichting Wederopbouw (CSW) intersection in Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta, was held on Wednesday.

The groundbreaking for MRT ASEAN was attended by Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan, officials from city-owned transportation companies PT Transjakarta and PT MRT Jakarta, as well as relevant stakeholders.

The integration of the CSW intersection will include the development of a connecting stop for the MRT station and the CSW Transjakarta shelter on the elevated 13th corridor, which connects Tendean in South Jakarta with Ciledug in Tangerang, Banten.

The CSW shelter was closed down soon after its launch in 2017, as it is perched 24 meters above the ground, accessed by a 117-step staircase, equivalent to a seven-story building, deemed too steep and not pedestrian friendly.

The transportation integration project applies the design concept called Cakra Selaras Wihana, named using the intersection’s abbreviation, designed by Jakarta-based architecture firm Studio Lawang, led by Patrisius Marvin Dalimartha. The architecture firm won the design competition held by Transjakarta in April last year. The connecting stop will have five stories that will include the MRT and Transjakarta stops and space for retailers.

The MRT and Transjakarta stops consisting of the existing CSW corridor 13 and construction of a new bus stop for Transjakarta corridor 1 serving the Blok M and Kota route, and a new feeder service bus stop for the MRT.

The development project is part of the efforts at intermodal integration aimed at boosting the use of public transportation in the capital.

Anies expressed optimism that the number of passengers would spike even though he had yet to set targets for the new facilities.

“In addition to those who have been using public transportation, [the new facilities] could attract new users," he said during the groundbreaking at MRT ASEAN on Wednesday.

Transjakarta president director Agung Wicaksono cited as an example of transportation integration the Hotel Indonesia traffic circle in Central Jakarta, where a connection stop has been made available to connect Transjakarta and the MRT since March last year.

“[Transjakarta] corridor 1 that passes the Hotel Indonesia traffic circle once reached 80,000 [passengers a day]. Apparently, the number of passengers in corridor 1 increased to 90,000 after the MRT operated,” Agung said after the groundbreaking.

The company recorded about 30,000 passengers a day on Transjakarta corridor 13.

MRT Jakarta president director William Sabandar expressed a similar wish, as MRT ASEAN contributed the least to the number of passengers riding the MRT if compared with other stations.

“[MRT ASEAN] has the least contribution of [ticket revenue], around 2 to 2.5 percent only, or about 2,500 passengers. Hopefully, it can become the same as the Blok M Station [one stop away] that has 8,000 passengers a day, or even more,” he said in his speech on the same occasion.

The transportation integration project will be divided into two phases.

A half circle-shape connection will be constructed in the first phase, which is expected to be complete at the end of July and open for the public in August.

In the meantime, a 145-m bridge placed on the west of MRT ASEAN will be built as new access, as well as interconnection with the Transjakarta corridor 13.

William said the construction of the new bridge was 66 percent complete. The facility is expected to be open for the public in March.

The second phase of the project intended to develop a new bus stop for the Transjakarta corridor 1, expected to complete by year-end.

The project costs a total of Rp 55 billion (US$4 million), comprising Rp 30 billion allocated for the first phase and Rp 25 billion for the second phase. The funding is sourced from Transjakarta’s capital injection accumulated from the past years.

The transportation integration project will incorporate about 450 square meters out of 3,000 sq m, — 15 percent — allocated for retailers and commercial purposes to contribute to nonfare boxes for Transjakarta.

After the CSW intersection, Anies said the city administration, in cooperation with state-owned train operator PT KAI and its subsidiary PT KCI, would integrate modes of transportation in Sudirman, Senen, Juanda and Tanah Abang stations as priorities.

The city administration and PT KAI have set up a joint venture named PT Moda Integrasi Transportasi Jabodetabek. The joint venture company will integrate Transjakarta buses, the MRT, Jakarta LRT, Greater Jakarta LRT and Commuter Line services.

Anies said Kebayoran Lama Station in South Jakarta would also be included in the transportation integration plan, in connecting the Commuter Line and the Transjakarta service.

“Kebayoran Lama Station is even more staggering. [The road] between the Commuter Line and the Transjakarta bus stop is quite challenging physically," Anies said, referring to the 850 m distance from the station to Velbak bus stop.
