ndonesia announced 1,624 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday, the highest single-day increase since its first cases emerged in early March, bringing the total number of infections nationwide to 59,394.

The Health Ministry’s daily report showed that 53 more people died from the disease Thursday, which puts the death toll at 2,987.

East Java, the country's new epicenter of the COVID-19 outbreak, has in recent days recorded the largest daily increases, and the trend continued on Thursday with 374 new infections.

The second-largest province in Indonesia has now recorded 12,695 cases, nearly a quarter of the country's total tally and the most of any region nationwide.

Jakarta trails behind East Java with 11,823 total cases after it recorded 190 new infections on Thursday.

South Sulawesi recorded 165 new cases, followed by Central Java with 153 and Bali with 113.

Despite a spike in the number of new infections, the Health Ministry's disease control and prevention director general, Achmad Yurianto, said that records also showed a significant increase in recoveries.

The number of recovered patients in Indonesia increased to 2,667 on Thursday.

“Banten, for instance, recorded only eight new cases, while also reporting 222 recovered patients,” Yuri said.

The figure, Yuri said, indicated that the trend would increase.

“Today, there are 18 provinces that reported under 10 new cases, while there are also six that reported zero cases, namely Aceh, Bangka Belitung, Jambi, West Kalimantan and Central Sulawesi.”

The record-high increase on Thursday was a result of aggressive tracing and massive testing, he said.

Yuri insisted that an increase in cases did not necessarily mean there would be an increase in the number of inpatients, as most of those with COVID-19 could undergo self-quarantine at home.

According to the government’s analysis, based on hospital occupancy rates, there was no significant increase in the number of occupied hospital beds.

“We have managed an occupancy rate of around 55.5 percent, around half the capacity,” Yuri said.

As of Thursday, COVID-19 has been detected in 452 regencies and municipalities in all 34 provinces in the country. (asp)
