oagulated oil found on the beaches of Pari Island may have originated from ships sailing through Thousands Islands’ waters, Thousand Islands Environment Agency head Djoko Rianto Budi said recently.

“As there are many ships [sailing through the islands], it is possible that [the coagulated oil] came from fuel leakages from ships or from dry docks,” Djoko said as quoted from Kompas.com on Tuesday.

He added that his agency had coordinated with state-owned oil giant Pertamina to examine samples of the coagulated oil at a laboratory.

“We have coordinated with Pertamina, but I have yet to receive updates. The people at Pertamina have been very cooperative,” Djoko said.

Previously, the Thousand Islands Environment Agency reported multiple sightings of coagulated oil in several spots around Pari Island. Coagulated oil has also washed ashore on Untung Jawa and Tidung islands. (dpk)
