ndonesian President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has expressed his hope for a stronger relationship with China during a phone call with Chinese President Xi Jinping, as the two countries commemorate 70 years of bilateral relations.

Jokowi made the phone call on Monday after Xi had sent a letter to mark the long-lasting bilateral relationship.

“Thank you for the letter, President Xi. Regarding the commemoration of 70 years of our bilateral relations, I hope the relations and cooperation between [our] countries can grow stronger and more mutually beneficial,” he said, according a press statement released by the Presidential Office on Tuesday.

During the phone call, Jokowi also expressed his appreciation to the Chinese government for recently welcoming Foreign Affairs Minister Retno LP Marsudi and State-Owned Minister Erick Thohir to discuss several cooperation deals in health care and the economy.

“I appreciate the Chinese government’s efforts to strengthen strategic health cooperation, including in the coproduction and provision of COVID-19 vaccines,” Jokowi said.

The President further asserted that economic cooperation should not stop despite the current pandemic, as seen in the arrangement of a travel corridor between the two countries on Aug. 21 in order to facilitate essential and urgent business trips.

Furthermore, during the phone call, Jokowi also thanked Xi for stronger investment cooperation between Indonesia and China.
