The long weekend is about to arrive, and it seems like everyone has exciting plans to get out of the city, except you.

Don’t be sad though, as there will be a lot of exciting events happening this week in Jakarta. From literature to movies, you can enjoy hopping from one spot to another while exploring not-so-crowded streets, which are very rare in Jakarta. 

See our list of events below and prepare your schedule, wallet and enthusiasm to enjoy the capital city this long weekend.

ASEAN Literary Festival 

Definitely a highlight, the ASEAN Literary Festival will gather poets, writers, publishers, communities, writers, readers and literature connoisseurs to nurture the mind with literature workshops, panel discussions, performances, book launches and much more on May 5-8. 

This third festival puts a focus on how ASEAN literary works and their authors respond and adapt to the current global state of affairs with the theme “The Story of Now”.

Big Bad Wolf 

There is nothing more exciting than attending a book fair that displays thousands of works of literature in one place. For book lovers, this is a real wonderland, especially as the book fair is open 24 hours this weekend. 

From April 30 to May 8, you can find discounted prices on your favorite books and wander around to find the best things to read. From comics to glossy coffee table books, there will be plenty to excite you.

Prepare a shopping list and your suitcase (to carry your books), and come to the Indonesia Convention Exhibition (ICE) venue in BSD City to start your exciting book adventure.

Jakarta International Jewellery Fair 2016 

This is a must-visit event for jewelry lovers as a wide selections of jewelry made from precious and semi-precious stones, diamonds, gold, silver and pearls will be showcased. 

Taking place in the heart of Jakarta on May 5-8, you can also see the latest styles in jewelry and find out about upcoming trends, as well as see some attractive merchandise such as accessories, machinery, equipment and tools, especially for those who are interested in jewelry making.

Europe on Screen 2016 

See Europe close-up on screen as 78 European movies are shown for free in Jakarta this weekend.

Venues like Taman Ismail Marzuki, Bintaro Jaya Xchange in South Tangerang, Erasmus Huis in South Jakarta, Goethe Haus in Central Jakarta, Institut Français Indonesia in Central Jakarta and Istituto Italiano di Cultura in Central Jakarta will screen movies and animation films from the Netherlands, Italy, France, Ireland, Spain and many more countries in six cities — Jakarta, Bandung, Denpasar, Medan, Surabaya and Yogyakarta. 

The festival will also host meet-and-greet events with three directors, Simon Gutknecht, Armin Tobler and Salome Lamas, and scriptwriter Moniek Kramer.  

JakCloth Summer Fest 2016 

Probably one of the city’s biggest clothing expos, JakCloth Summer Fest will bring 380 indie brands together in one place. 

Slated for May 4-8, the event will also stage performances from famous bands such as NAIF and Maliq & D’Essentials. 

Various brands with different styles will display their products and will offer discounts of up to 70 percent for purchases at the fair. (kes)
