he second Malang Coffee Festival is currently ongoing at East Java Krida Budaya Park in Malang, the event is held from September 22 to 24.

With the theme “Bersatu Kita Ngopi” (United We Drink Coffee) the event features activities such as coffee movie competition, barista battle, art performances and signature drink competition.

For those who want to learn more about Indonesian coffee, there are educational activities like Coffee ‘Kepo’ Talkshow and Cupping & Roasting Workshop.

Malang Coffee Festival 2017 also hosts a diverse range of exhibitors such as coffee farmers, suppliers, interior designers, coffee shops, coffee farmers community, coffee machine suppliers and others.

Malang mayor Mochamad Anton said that Indonesia is an archipelago country where each region has its own coffee characteristic. As a coffee producer, Indonesia produces 700,000 tons of coffee annually.

“Malang Coffee Festival is being held for the second time, it is a coffee party for the people of Indonesia. It serves the finest coffee from all parts of Indonesia, be it processed coffee or green coffee bean,” said Mochamad.

“Coffee is a part of the society, in several regions coffee is a part of their daily life, [coffee] also becomes a tourist attraction,” added tourism the ministry's Archipelago Tourism Marketing Development deputy, Esthy Reko Astuti.

According to the data from Malang culture and tourism department, there had been an increase in the number of tourists in the past two years. In 2015 there were 3,290,067 domestic tourists and 8,265 international tourists who visited Malang. In 2016, the numbers increased to 3,987,074 domestic and 9,535 international tourists.

“This is in line with the tourism ministry’s target in increasing the numbers of domestic and international tourists as much as possible, to improve the attractiveness of a tourist destination and participation local businesses, broaden the diversity of tourist products and services in every destination,” told Esthy.

Tourism minister Arief Yahya said that coffee has become the nation’s identity and Indonesian coffee is always served in every overseas exhibition and promotion. Moreover, Indonesian coffee always attracts the attention of foreign people and Arief makes sure to put coffee festival as one of the ministry’s strategic programs that aim to attract tourists.
