ational flag carrier Garuda Indonesia and airport operator PT Angkasa Pura II (AP II) have apologized to a passenger whose luggage was stolen from a conveyor belt in Terminal 3 of Soekarno-Hatta International Airport on May 12.

The airline also promised to compensate the passenger, whose complaint about the incident had gone viral on social media.

“In order to handle the situation, we have coordinated with [AP II] and the ground handling operator, PT. Gapura Angkasa, to conduct an investigation and hand the case over to the airport authorities,” Garuda vice president corporate secretary Hengky Heriandono said in a statement.

Police are also investigating the case.

CTV footage of Terminal 3’s baggage claim area shows an unidentified man removing the passenger’s two suitcases from the conveyor belt and leaving with them.

To prevent similar incidents, Garuda and airport authorities said they would improve the surveillance and handling of baggage at Terminal 3 by maximizing the use of CCTV cameras and stationing non-uniformed officers at baggage claim areas for increased security.

Garuda and Gapura Angkasa have also increased random baggage checks, particularly for domestic flights, to confirm that passengers’ baggage tags match.

AP II and ground handling officers will also work to ensure that baggage is delivered within a maximum of 20 minutes after landing, with the last bags reaching conveyor belts 40 minutes after the first delivery, at the latest. (mut)
