Around 100 participants, mostly from outside Central Java, participated in the Gowes Karimunjawa #4 cycling event on Saturday.

Located around 112 kilometers from the north side of Semarang or 78 km from Jepara regency, the island of Karimunjawa boasts smooth roads that allow cyclists to enjoy the view and fresh ocean air as they ride their bike.

“This year, we welcomed more participants from outside Central Java, up to twofold,” said Central Java Youth, Sports and Tourism Agency head Sinoeng N. Rachmadi.

Karimunjawa is known for its marine tourism, but the landscape is equally attractive, he added.

The friendly cycling race featured two routes, each of which was 25 km long. The first one saw participants travel from Ujung Gelam Beach to Unduh Degan Kemojan, before stopping at Laendra Beach. The second route passed a mangrove area, Anora Beach and then returned to Karimunjawa’s town square.

The cyclists were accompanied by six road captains who hail from the region.

Most of the cyclists took the KM Kalimutu ferry and arrived at Karimunjawa Island at 7 a.m., which explained the race’s late start at 8:45 a.m.

Following the event, several bicycle communities urged the committee to also hold a competitive race. (kes)
