Tourist destination Tana Toraja in South Sulawesi is working toward developing a tourist village and homestay program.

The Tourism Ministry's head of tourist village development, Anneke Prasyanti, said in a statement that the so-called Tourism Village Homestay Program was among the ministry's three priority programs that aimed to fulfill amenity needs at lodging sites.

"The program will make use of the already available property to directly impact the locals economically," she said as quoted by Antara news agency.

"Other than buildings, local traditions and culture can also be sold to tourists, hence the need for preservation," Anneke said, adding that homestays would offer a different experience than a hotel, as they highlighted the home-sharing concept in which visitors live together with the locals and carry out activities together.
