ogyakarta has long been among the most favorite destinations in the country. With its rich traditions and natural beauty, Yogyakarta is filled with alluring activities for tourists.

Included in many locations in the city are prime holiday destinations, some of which are free.

Kompas.com has compiled a list of budget-friendly activities you can do during your visit to the city of Yogyakarta. 

1. Ride the ‘odong-odong’ in Alun-Alun Kidul

If you visit Alun-Alun Kidul (Kidul Square), chances are you’ll spot colorful vehicles called odong-odong as they circle around the area.

The fare for renting one car can range between Rp 20,000 (US$1.4) and Rp 25,000.

The streets of Alun-Alun Kidul is also filled with Indonesian street food like grilled bakso (meatballs) or cilok (Indonesian sago cakes), which are perfect for snacking.

2. Take a stroll through Malioboro

Malioboro is a district in Yogyakarta famous for its shopping opportunities. It provides visitors a wide variety of souvenirs and culinary delights to choose from. Many choose to explore Malioboro simply by walking while taking in the charm of the surroundings.

The area also has a lot of locations where you can take beautiful photos.

3. Witness flickering city lights on Bukit Bintang

Bukit Bintang (Starry Hill) is located in Patuk, Gunungkidul, around 20 kilometers from the city center. From this hill, you can enjoy the views of Yogyakarta surrounded by lush greenery.

Once the sun sets, the view transforms as numerous city lights shine, resembling the sight of a starry sky — hence the hill’s name. The location has a few food stalls in which you can sit and relax while admiring the view.

4. Snap photos at the iconic Tugu Jogja

Tugu Jogja (Yogyakarta Monument) is the city’s iconic landmark. Many come here on the hunt for great photos.

Aside from its Instagram-worthy nature, the area is home to unique eateries that are worth trying. Among them is Kopi Jos (Jos Coffee), where customers can enjoy charcoal coffee.

5. View Prambanan temple from Spot Riyadi
