tate-owned fertilizer producer Pupuk Indonesia signed a heads of agreement (HoA) with Brunei Fertilizer Industries (BFI) to advance the development of the ammonia and urea fertilizer industry.

BFI is an ammonia and urea granular fertilizer manufacturer in Brunei Darussalam.

The partnership between the two state-owned companies is seen as a first step in establishing an integrated ammonia and urea manufacturing industry ecosystem among ASEAN states, according to a press release issued by the Indonesian company on Tuesday.

In the initial stage, the companies are to make progress on their marketing strategies, operational and maintenance services and factory development as well as to procure critical equipment and spare parts.

Pupuk Indonesia president director Rahmad Pribadi said the companies were planning to expand the partnership to include fertilizer producers across ASEAN member states to strengthen regional food security.

“Pupuk Indonesia saw this collaboration as [an opportunity] to strengthen regional relations, especially in ASEAN. We want to make sure that there are no interruptions in our [business] operations because fertilizer availability is directly related to food security,” he said in a press release issued on Tuesday.
