The House of Representatives is set to pass a revision to the Constitutional Court Law in any upcoming plenary session after the legislature and government agreed to endorse the bill in an unannounced, closed-door meeting while lawmakers were still in recess.
awmakers finally won the support of the government for a revision to the Constitutional Court Law that critics say could allow policymakers to unduly influence the judiciary.
The House of Representatives is set to pass the bill in any upcoming plenary session after lawmakers at Commission III overseeing legal affairs and representatives of President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s administration agreed to endorse the bill in an unannounced, closed-door meeting on Monday, when lawmakers were still in recess.
Deputy House Speaker Sufmi Dasco Ahmad of Gerindra Party said on Tuesday that the House may pass the bill into law in the current plenary session, although he stopped short of giving a date.
During Monday’s closed-door meeting, Coordinating Political, Legal and Security Affairs Minister Hadi Tjahjanto, conveyed the government’s approval of the results of the bill’s deliberations.
“The government agrees to continue the deliberations and bring the bill for approval in a plenary meeting,” Hadi said in a press statement, arguing that several revised provisions in the law would further reinforce the court’s role in safeguarding the 1945 Constitution.
Commission III started deliberating the amendment in December last year. However, the bill was opposed by Hadi’s predecessor, Mahfud MD, a former Constitutional Court chief justice who resigned from the coordinating ministerial post to run for vice president in the general election that was held in February. He, along with presidential candidate Ganjar Pranowo, lost the race.
