Former West Java governor Ridwan Kamil is among the popular figures to run in both the West Java and Jakarta gubernatorial elections, various recent opinion polls have found.
s parties vet potential candidates for the upcoming simultaneous regional elections, former West Java governor Ridwan Kamil may have his sights set on a reelection run rather than competing in a race for the Jakarta gubernatorial post, the Golkar Party has said.
Speaking to reporters following a House of Representatives plenary session on Tuesday, Golkar lawmaker and head of the party’s West Java office Ace Hasan Syadzily said that Ridwan had told the party of his preference to run for a second term as West Java governor.
“I have told party chair [Airlangga Hartarto] multiple times: I think Ridwan is better suited to run in West Java,” Ace said. “But it’ll still be up to the party, chairman and the central executive board [DPP] on where he will be posted [in the upcoming regional elections].”
The upcoming regional elections, slated for Nov. 27, will be the first time that voters elect their governors, mayors and regents simultaneously across 37 provinces (minus Yogyakarta) and over 500 regencies and cities.
Chairman Airlangga previously said the party would decide on Ridwan’s assignment based on his electability ratings in the coming months.
