Industrial players enliven digital learning through participation in ISODEL 2021

T

he Education, Culture, Research and Technology Ministry held the International Open, Distance and e-Learning Symposium (ISODEL) from Dec. 1 to 3, with the central theme of “Education technology in the new normal: Now and beyond”.

ISODEL 2021 was a success. It gained support from government agencies that are part of the Indonesian Distance Learning Network (IDLN). The IDLN’s members, including various ministries and institutions, also organized a series of Road to Isodel 2021 events consisting of webinars and live events.

At the Asian level, the Institute for Information Industry, Taiwan, together with Seamolec and the Center of Data and Information at the education ministry, held METAEDU 2021 that also contributed to the education technology innovation dialogue before the main ISODEL 2021 event.

Business organizations are playing a significant role in rebuilding Indonesia’s education system in the new normal era. They help provide an ecosystem that enables digital education to nurture talented human resources. They featured in the list of booth tenants that lined the ISODEL 2021 exhibition hall, including Epson, Complus, Acer, Telkom Indonesia, Telkomsel, Google, Fujitsu, Microsoft, Refo and Smartfren.

Educators and students alike are familiar with the innovative products and services digital firms have provided, such as those from Google, Microsoft, Acer and Epson.

ISODEL 2021 also invited industry experts to give lectures on utilizing appropriate technology in the learning process. Meanwhile, tech giants held workshops to demonstrate their newest technological innovations and services. Among them were Microsoft with its learning services and Epson Indonesia on robotics.

The industrial sector has also collaborated with the government to support e-learning throughout the pandemic. Communications and Information Technology Minister Johnny G. Platte expressed his appreciation for companies sponsoring the Learning Management System (LMS).

The Communications and Information Technology Ministry has collaborated with communication and network providers such as Telkomsel and Smartfren. Refo Indonesia also organized its belajar.id service for distance learning as more and more schools closed and switched to online learning.

The cooperation between the government and industry is a valuable investment in constructing educational and cultural ecosystems that are effective and efficient. The government has allocated Rp 100 trillion for educational funding, research and culture to further develop Indonesia’s budding talent.

“As we move forward with distance learning during the pandemic, we also realize the need to focus on building infrastructure for better networking and communication. More than 20,000 families across Indonesia do not have access to an internet connection,” Finance Minister Sri Mulyani explained. “The government has also provided subsidies, including for internet quota. We hope to be able to provide internet access to every student, teacher and lecturer for learning in the pandemic era,” she added.

Other than business organizations, ISODEL 2021 also invited multiple institutions to give lectures and updates on educational technology. They included experts, lecturers and officials from the Institute for Information Industry, Taiwan, the University of Indonesia, the University of Virginia, Universiti Sains Malaysia, the Australian Embassy, Edx, the Information Telecommunications Union, Ohio University, EFL Schools Greece, Arizona State University, SEAMO VOCTECH, the Open University of the United Kingdom, Turku University, KPK MUI, Nusantara Institute, Open University Indonesia and the University of Texas Arlington.

.

At the end of ISODEL 2021, Hasan Chabibie, head of the Center for Data and Information at the education ministry, observed the dynamics that played out throughout the online symposium. He appreciated the learning innovations and media developed by the presenters, the government and industry.

“ISODEL 2021 has proven that now is the time to collaborate and complement one another to produce the most optimal work,” Hasan said.

He also invited all parties involved to uphold the 11 recommendations developed through the course of ISODEL 2021.

Through https://isodelexpo.kemdikbud.go.id, participants can attend virtual stands by various agencies and industry representatives that collaborated in ISODEL 2021, which can be accessed after the end of the symposium.
