rom May 20 to 22, Coordinating Minister of Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto made a working visit to the Republic of Korea to further enhance bilateral relations and economic cooperation between the two countries.
The senior minister attended several meetings on investing in Indonesia with Korean business leaders, including the CEO of LG CNS on investing in data center management, consulting services and information and communications technology (ICT), the CEO of Hyundai Motor Group on investing in hydrogen development and the chairman of Lotte Chemical about investing in the development of Indoneisa’s downstream petrochemicals industry.
During his visit, Airlangga was granted an honorary doctorate from Gyeongsang National University (GNU), in recognition of his personal and professional contributions over the years to strengthening the two countries’ strategic partnership. He also held a bilateral meeting with Korean Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE) Ahn Duk Geun to discuss industrial cooperation, trade and the energy transition.
Airlangga then traveled to Japan to represent President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo at this year’s Nikkei Forum themed "Future of Asia", which runs from May 23 to 24 in Tokyo.
In addition to political leaders, the event features a series of panel discussions with experts from various fields. The discussion topics include regional cooperation to build a digital ecosystem, Asia's efforts to achieve net-zero emissions and the roles of Japan, the United States and South Korea in regional security in Northeast Asia.
Meanwhile, Japan and ASEAN are set to formulate strategies for the next decade at the prestigious global opinion forum. The Nikkei Forum 2024 is also hosting political, economic and academic leaders from the Asia-Pacific region to openly and freely express their views on regional issues and Asia's role in the world.
The international gathering, organized annually by Nikkei Inc. since 1995, is considered one of the most important global conferences in Asia.
Minister Airlangga, on behalf of President Jokowi, attended the commemorative dinner on the first day of the Nikkei Forum 2024, which opened with a speech by Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. Global leaders who also attended the dinner included Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister Le Minh Khai, Singaporean Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong, Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chanthol, ASEAN Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn and former Malaysian prime minister Mahathir Mohamad.
Numerous top executives of major global companies and academics from a variety of renowned universities worldwide also attended the event.
