essaging application WhatsApp has come under fire for lewd GIF images. According to kompas.com, Indonesian internet users began to share information about the “pornographic content” on the app on Sunday.

The Indonesian Consumers Foundation (YLKI) is said to have called on the Communications and Information Ministry to block access to the images.

Responding to the controversy, WhatsApp said in a press release that it had begun to coordinate with the government, requesting them to contact the third party GIF provider directly for content monitoring.

As reported by Antara news agency, the company stated that the GIF feature was provided by a third party platform, saying that they could not monitor the GIF images on the app, as the end-to-end encryption ensures only users and the persons they are communicating with can read the messages.
