asikirana Dancelab, a contemporary dance community comprising alumni of a workshop it hosts, presented Pasar Purnama, a performing arts show at Galeri Indonesia Kaya in the Grand Indonesia shopping mall, Central Jakarta, on Saturday.
The show was one of several featured as part of Panggung Ruang Kreatif, a performing arts event initiated by the Bakti Budaya Djarum Foundation and the Garin Workshop.
The 50-minute show reportedly showcased reinterpreted versions of rituals and Sundanese classical dances, highlighting the Sudanese community and its beliefs on Dewi Sri, the goddess of fertility.
As an open community, Sasikirana Dancelab allows the alumni to experiment and contribute in developing the country’s performing arts scene.

The performance by Pasar Purnama was said to be a collaborative work of four choreographers.
Tyoba Armei, one of the choreographers, said in a press release that the team did research on "Dewi" (Goddess), a classical Sundanese dance choreographed by Irawati Durban. They then reinterpreted it into a performing arts show, highlighting the relationship between rituals and traditions and nature.
Tyoba said the team saw the attempt of developing contemporary arts as an effort to raise public awareness about national identity issues. (jes/wng)
