Batik Chic designer holds a photo exhibition portraying 121 figures from 23 different communities who are fond of batik.
esigner Novita Yunus commemorated Batik Day on Saturday, Oct. 13, at Grha Bimasena in The Dharmawangsa Hotel, South Jakarta. Batik Day falls every Oct. 2.
Entitled My Priceless Heritage – Batik, Identity & Legacy, the event consisted of a photo exhibition, fashion show, bazaar and discussion panel.
121 people from 23 communities and two additional renowned figures were selected as models for the photo exhibition, which displayed more than 20 frames. Among the communities are the Bankers Community and Komunitas Pecinta Wastra Indonesia (Indonesian Traditional Fabrics Enthusiasts), while the two figures are Femina magazine editor-in-chief Petty Fatimah and harpist Maya Hasan. All of the models wore outfits designed by Batik Chic, a brand founded by Novita in 2009.
All of the photos can still be viewed at Alun Alun Indonesia in Grand Indonesia, Central Jakarta, until the end of October.
This is not Novita's first photo exhibition. Last year, she had 21 inspiring women captured for the brand’s Kartini project. “Batik Chic has many clients who love wearing traditional fabrics, so I want to appreciate them through photo exhibition,” Novita told The Post after the event on Saturday, Oct. 13, in South Jakarta.
Her photos from the Kartini project are scheduled to be exhibited in Florence, Italy, at the Festival del Cinema di Indonesia (Indonesian Film Festival) for three days from Oct. 26 to 28.

The fashion show consists of two parts; casual and kebaya (traditional long-sleeved blouse for women). “For the casual collection, I showcased batik from the late Prianti Gagarin who was the Indonesian Ambassador to Venezuela, while in the second part I showcased outfits from Batik Chic,” Novita said, adding that there were a total of 30 looks.
Starting from 10 a.m., the bazaar offered collections of Batik Chic from fabrics and clothes to jewelry and bags. The event also featured Novita’s journey in establishing Batik Chic and batik business in general with economist Aviliani, brand consultant Uti Rahardjo and psychologist Ratih Ibrahim.
My Priceless Heritage is part of the book about Batik Chic’s 10th anniversary that is set to be released next year.
“I’m currently preparing for the 2018 Jakarta Fashion Week because we’ll be having five shows there,” said Novita. “I also plan to open the new outlet of NY by Novita Yunus, my premium brand, in Singapore this month.” (asw)
