Thousands of Jakarta taxi drivers protest against ride-hailing app During the action they demanded the closure of application service company like Uber, Grab and Gojek. Thousands of Jakarta taxi drivers, members of the Land Transportation Drivers Association [PPAD], have been protesting against ride-hailing apps. The protests were staged twice, first in front of the State Palace in Jakarta on March 14 and then at several locations such as Senayan, Jl. Sudirman and in front of the Communications and Information Ministry in Central Jakarta on March 22.

The drivers demanded the closure of application service companies such as Uber, Grab and Gojek, which the drivers claim are illegal and have adversely affected their incomes.

The legalization of ride-hailing apps would allow the use of private vehicles for public transportation to flourish. The drivers have denied that they are against technological developments. However, they have urged the government to impose firm regulations on illegal services.
