ANGERANG: A protest rally turned violent on Tuesday after irate construction contractors and NGO activists broke into the Tangerang Public Works and Irrigation Agency.
The contractors, who rallied to demand transparency in project bidding, destroyed documents related to the regency’s contracts for 2011, sealed the office and told employees to leave early.
The agency had not awarded 402 projects worth Rp 269 billion (US$31.47 million) transparently, according to a spokesman for the protestors.
Protest leader Dedi Kurniadi said that there was evidence that agency officials had interfered in contracting process. “The process is no longer fair. Some of the projects have been sold off,” Dedi, also the chairman of the Tangerang Chamber of Commerce, said as quoted by tempointeraktif.com. — JP
