AKARTA: Economist Faisal Basri says he will run in the 2012 Jakarta gubernatorial election as an independent candidate.
Faisal said he was now preparing a team to collect copies of identity cards from 350 Jakartans as the token of support for his candidacy.
He said that running as an independent candidate would give him an advantage over candidates supported by corrupt political parties.
“Existing political parties are now controlled by cartels, businesspeople and the public can see through them,” he said as quoted by tempointeraktif.com.
Faisal said that currently he was looking for a suitable candidate to serve as his running mate.
He said that among the candidates of his choice were urban architect Marco Kusumawijaya and model-turned-National Mandate Party (PAN) politician Wanda Hamidah.
But Faisal said that he would only pick independent candidates as his running mate.
Faisal is one of the founding members of PAN and once served on the central board of PAN.
The 51-year-old economist also ran in the 2007 gubernatorial poll. JP
