AKARTA: Starting today (Wednesday) the Jakarta Police will launch a city-wide operation to crack down on vanity licence plates.
Head of the law enforcement division at the City Police Traffic Division Comr. Adhie Santika said that owners of vehicles with vanity plates would receive fines of Rp 500,000 (US$55).
In the operation, violators would also be instructed to remove their plates on the spot.
Adhie said the police would only tolerate licence plates that met the standard set by the National Police.
“We have already set the standard. The letters and numbers should be in order and should not be put together as words,” he was quoted by kompas.com.
The police will also look for vehicles owned by government institutions with logos obscuring licence plates.
Last week, The Jakarta Police launched a crack-down on civilian vehicles sporting fake military or police logos.
