AKARTA: Labor union leaders have called on the Jakarta administration to increase the minimum wage by at least 18.5 percent, to Rp 1,529,150 (US$170) next year and threatened to hold a massive rally if the demand is not met.
Spokesman for the Jakarta Labor Forum, Muhammad Rusdi, said that the current provincial minimum wage of Rp 1,290,000 was barely enough for even single workers to live a decent life in the capital.
“The standard cost of living in Jakarta is currently Rp 1,529,150 and the new minimum wage should at least cover that,” Rusdi told reporters.
Rusdi said more than 85,000 workers would join the rally, slated for later this month. The standard cost of living is set by the city administration’s Remuneration Board, which is chaired by representatives from the city government, labor unions and employers’ associations.
Governor Fauzi Bowo has the final say in any decision regarding the minimum wage.
