AKARTA: Residents of Pondok Labu in South Jakarta say that a Marine Corps culvert project, thought to be the cause of recent massive flooding in the area, is illegal.

Community leaders in the area alleged that the corps had not conducted an environmental impact analysis (Amdal) for the construction of the culverts, which were built to support an extension of the corps’ shooting range.

“The governor had warned before construction began that no Amdal had been produced. What we don’t understand is why the project continued without the analysis,” one of Kampung Pulo neighborhood leaders Sugiyono said as quoted by kompas.com.

Separately, chairman of the Jakarta Residents Forum (Fakta) Azas Tigor Nainggolan alleged that the project was a violation of the 2009 Environment Law.

“The marines should rehabilitate the river and pay compensation to local residents,” Azas said.
