T

he police detained three men on Tuesday for questioning about the nightclub killing of Pangudi Luhur senior high school student Raafi Aga Winasya Benjamin.

A statement released by the Jakarta Police identified the three men as H., T. and F., also known as Bacol.

Officers took the men into custody at their homes on Tuesday morning. H. was in Central Jakarta, T. was in Lenteng Agung, South Jakarta; and F. was in Ancol, North Jakarta.

Police said that the detentions were ordered after detectives collected enough evidence to implicate the three in the stabbing death of Raafi at the Shy Rooftop restaurant in the tony neighborhood of Kemang, South Jakarta, on Nov. 5.

Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Baharudin Djafar said that the men had not yet been named suspects in the case.

“They are being questioned by our investigators,” Baharudin told The Jakarta Post on Tuesday.

Separately, South Jakarta Police chief Sr. Comr. Imam Sugianto said the police would make a decision on naming the men suspects on Wednesday.

Under the Criminal Code, the police may hold individuals for 24 hours for questioning, which can be extended by investigators for a maximum of 20 days.

“We will issue an official statement on their status tomorrow,” Imam said.

Raafi was stabbed following a scuffle between him and his friends and a group of patrons at a nearby table at the nightclub, according to detectives.

One of Raffi’s friends threw a cigarette butt at a man identified as M. after someone from M.’s group deliberately bumped into a member of Raafi’s group.

M. and his friends were offended and the attacked Raafi’s group on the nightclub’s dance floor, based on the detective’s preliminary reenactment of the crime.

The fight ended when Raafi was seen bleeding from a wound to his stomach.

The men arrested on Tuesday are reportedly friends of M.

Separately, Allova Mengko, the spokeswoman for the lawyers hired by Pangudi Luhur senior high school, said that they would continue to monitor the police investigation.

Allova said that the lawyers had not received official notice of the arrests. “We still have not heard anything about the detention from them,” she said.

The lawyers had also not received a response to their question to the police about a report that the men would be charged with battery and not involuntary manslaughter.

“We want them to confirm all information that we’ve received,” he said.

Allova said that the lawyers would tell their side of the story at a press briefing on Wednesday.
