Tangerang cites 747 as traffic program begins

AKARTA: The Tangerang City Police say officers have fined 747 people for traffic offenses during the first two days of Jakarta’s annual Zebra Jaya traffic crackdown.

In Jakarta the police recorded the most offenses on the city’s major streets, such as Jl. Sudirman, Jl. Thamrin, Jl. HOS Cokroaminoto, Jl. Daan Mogot, Jl. M. Yamin and Jl. Serang Raya.

“Most of the offenders were motorcyclists. They were fined for not wearing helmets, for not turning on their lights, for carrying more than one passenger, for driving in the wrong lanes and for not being able to show their licenses,” Tangerang City Police traffic unit chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Pamudji said on Tuesday.

Tangerang Police officers have also confiscated eight cars and 18 motorcycles during the operation.

Operation Zebra Jaya will run from Nov. 28 until Dec. 11 this year, focusing on educating drivers and pedestrians about the rules of the road.

Last year’s operation recorded 103,630 violations, including 70,253 motorcycle-related offenses.

More than 15,000 incidents of people riding motorcycles without a helmets were recorded, along with 13,070 reports of people driving in the wrong lane.
