fterfour years, Silk Air, the regional wing of full-service carrier SingaporeAirlines, has decided to reopen direct flights between Singapore and Makassarin South Sulawesi. The route will be officially opened on August 1.
Silk Air manager for Sulawesi, Susan Yong, said that the economic development of South Sulawesi had increased over the past four years.
South Sulawesi, especially Makassar, was also chosen because it is the primary port and airline hub of eastern Indonesia.
In the other hand, Sultan Hasanuddin Airport has increased its capacity and has a 3,500-meter runway after undergoing some renovation.
Silk Air will use Airbus A319 and A320 and will fly three times a week from Makassar and Singapore and vice versa.
South Sulawesi Governor Syahrul Yasin Limpo expressed his support for the route reopening, saying that it would increase the province's economic growth.
He said the route would also aid cooperation between the province and Singapore.
'We export commodities like cacao and seafood to Singapore,' Syahrul said, adding that his administration would also cooperate with Changi International Airport to hold a number of events in the future.
