As she begins building her portfolio in the entertainment business, budding actress Chelsea Elizabeth Islan is setting her sights on a future in film production. Her goal: direct a Hollywood movie. The 18-year-old is currently working on her second feature film, the high-octane action flick Street Society, full of super cars and street racing.
'In the movie, I play Karina, who is a character walking a fine line between protagonist and antagonist. She starts as a nice and kindhearted girl before turning into a mean one. It was really fun.
The character has so many traits that It was fun and challenging at the same time.
I had only one scene driving one of the super cars, but what an experience that was. In the scene I drove a green Lamborghini Galardo. It was an exhilarating experience because I don't have a driver's license, and the Galardo was my first experience driving a real car ' a super car at that ' on a real road.
I had to drive the car on the road, weaving in between motorcycles and a public minivan. Luckily, it was an automatic transmission. I'd definitely have more trouble driving a stick.
I'm still focusing on my acting career, because it helps me build up my portfolio in moviemaking. My ultimate dream is to work in film production.
I've been making short movies for several years now. With a very small crew, I take the role of director, screenwriter and also art director.
I'm taking a course at the creative media technology institute, the School of Audio Engineering in Jakarta. In one of the projects, I got to direct a short movie within a one-day span. It was stressful, but the experience was worthwhile.
During my time off, my mind often wanders and I think about movie ideas. Like if I find something interesting in the real world, I will quickly think how to use it in a movie.
I'm now taking a gap year after graduating high school. Next year, I'm planning to study film production at the New York Film Academy. It's offering a round-up associate degree, allowing me to learn about moviemaking, screenwriting, directing and theater.
I've set my mind in this direction, hoping that one day I could actually direct films in Hollywood.'
